Residents Experiencing more Bees in the Village
The number of calls to Property Services regarding honey bees is up this year. Residents should be aware that due to slightly more rainfall this past season and milder than normal weather year to date, a definite increase in honey bee swarms and colonies has been recorded in Laguna Woods Village as well as surrounding regions. As a result, there is an increased likelihood that some of these colonies may display the more aggressive behavior that is typical of Africanized honeybees when protecting their colony.
Furthermore, given that several years ago, the Orange County Agricultural Department declared that all honey bees should be considered to be Africanized honeybees, it is recommended that residents be especially cautious should they see a colony of bees, and report the colony location to Property Services at 597-4600.
Hives or colonies can usually be identified when honey bees are observed entering or exiting an opening in a structure of some sort that would provide shelter for the colony. Honey bees observed hovering about flowering trees and shrubs are usually foraging for pollen and typically pose no threat to the public.

National Survey Affirms Community Association Success
Published by the Community Associations Institute
For the fourth time over a span of 10 years, community association residents have told pollsters they are satisfied with their homeowners associations, condominium communities and cooperatives.
Independent, national research conducted by Zogby International in December 2009 showed that seven in ten community association residents are satisfied in their communities, with only 12 percent expressing some level of discontent and 17 percent neither satisfied nor unsatisfied.
More than 60 million Americans reside in an estimated 305,000 association-governed communities, from town home communities and cooperatives to high-rise condominiums and city-size master-planned associations.
Third and United ask WARE to reduce the number of newspaper bins in the Community
June 2010: Newspaper recycling bins can be found in the trash enclosures in the Carport, laundry room areas or underground garages throughout Laguna Woods Village. In each location, there are two or more newspaper recycling bins. Frequently, both newspaper bins are not full by pickup day, so the community has been paying for more pickups than needed. The Third Mutual and the United Mutual Landscape Committees have directed WARE Disposal to remove one newspaper bin from each location throughout their mutuals. The removal of the bins will be phased in over a period of several weeks.
If the removal of a bin in an enclosure leads to newspaper overflow of the remaining bin, please call Property Services at (949) 597-4600 to report the problem.
